Game Topper: A table topper to rule them all!

I always wanted to get a game table to play Flames of War or the countless board games I have but they were so darn expensive. Along came a man named Berky with his . The idea behind the Game Toppers, that you can take something that looks like a game table but without the actual legs part. Something that is portable, and easy to store away in between game sessions.

For me, the draw of the Game Topper was that you can have a table where the dice don’t fall off the table because the table is actually inside the sides a set of rails. Also, I wanted to have a cup holder right at the table. Other game tables start at $2500 and up. Most companies don’t even offer a size large enough for a miniature wargame board.

In fact, Game Toppers focussed on smaller sizes until they realized there was such a high demand for a miniature wargaming topper. The Mycroft size is 48″ by 72″ and perfect for the 4 ft x 6 ft games. Retail pricing for the Mycroft begins at $899.00 (USD) with that can be added.

I decided to take the plunge and buy the package that included the bag, two dice towers, three game mats, and cup holder inserts. All in all, it ran about $1500, including shipping.

The question was: did I score or was this just one of those ways you try to save money and end up spending more because you still have to buy the more expensive option later when the cheaper option turns out to be a dud.

The Topper

Dining room after assembling the Game Topper

The Game Topper itself was beautiful. It is a bit heavier than expected because it was marketed as lightweight. This wasn’t a size they originally planned on making, so the “lightweight” specifications may not have included the 4×6 foot size.

I began by assembling the Topper and set it on two of the Lifetime brand folding tables. Initially, there was a gap where the two halves of the topper connected and there was a visible fault line in the middle of the table. I wondered if I got a bad table and considered calling the company. However, after moving the topper on my dining room table the problem instantly went away. A solid, single support table is preferable to two or more support tables.

The topper is made of very strong materials and it feels like it could last forever. As advertised, the topper is comfortable to lean on and seems to rests on the supporting table with no clamps or straps.  My topper is a bit larger than my dining room table, and even though it hangs off the sides, it will not tip over, nor slide around. The topper has rubber cushion strips on the bottom. This helps prevent it from marking up the support table, and prevents the topper from sliding around.

The Inserts

These things really complete the table. I highly recommend that you upgrade to the MDPE inserts as they are very durable and the larger tray can fit over the part where the two halves connect.

these things around, and they are great for holding dice, tokens and game pieces out of the way. Oh, and you can put a cup in them too.

They come with a cover so you can just use them as a plank to put dice, tokens, etc on them too. If you get a custom game table from other companies, drawers and cup holders have to be pre-planned where they are going to be built into and they cannot be moved. One company did copy the idea of this rail system when doing my research and you should expect all the other companies to follow suit as Game Toppers is onto something here.

The Dice Towers

These are great. They hook onto the side of the Game Topper. The dice roll right onto the table. They also can slide around, to avoid raining dice onto your models. The towers can also be removed.

At this time I cannot recommend the defense tower as dice get caught up in them. The space tower works great though.

The towers are not hard to put together but they are not easy either. They are made out of a card-wood type of material but are pretty sturdy when glued together. The budget-conscious consumer can skip this option because.

The Game Mats

The Grass Mat

This is a mixed bag.  The quality of the materials is excellent. They are very plush and appear very durable. The mats I chose were the space, grass and winter mats.  The grass mat was a disappointment. It will look nice when the terrain is put on it but the graphic looks like someone painted with a brush.

The Winter Mat

The winter mat is my favorite. It is what someone might expect from Table War or a similar company.

The Space Mat

The space mat is probably the most impressive. It has a great graphics and will get the most wows from non-miniature gamers. The rubber pads underneath are cushiony and slip restaurant. My biggest worry was that mats made by other companies may not fit so I put my Table War mat down and it was a perfect fit.

A Table War brand mat fits!

Conclusion

I am extremely happy with my purchase. The Game Toppers 6×4 game table has the right features and retails for less than $1500 (USD).

For gamers who lack either the skill to make their own tables or those who need a gaming surface that doesn’t stay set up, but can be easily disassembled and stored, the Game Topper is a great choice.  It is flexible, well made, AND portable.

In addition to all of this, since it is in two pieces, you can add a rail to one or both halves and have a 3×4 table(s) for regular board games.

I would definitely buy this again and recommend you give a look.
