Play a while with the Arty observer, but they're either very awesome or very "WTF did I spend points on him for?"

Other than that, I've not played against French yet, so no great insights.
Play what you find fun... anything else is a waste of sixes
I currently play: Bolt Action, Warlords of Erehwon, and Cruel Seas
occasionally Blood and Plunder, Armada, and whatever strikes my fancy

So, having played a few games with my French I've found some things out about them I thought I'd share.

French Infantry are pretty good in the fact they can take VB Launchers. I generally kit mine out in standard formation - 10 men, 8 Rifles, 1 LMG, 1 Loader & a VB Launcher. I actually find the Infantry to be the strongest unit in my French army.

VB Launchers are light mortars - 6"- 18" range, HE 1".

Artillery is another area where the French excel. You can take a free regular medium artillery or AT Gun if you take another at full cost. I've been taking 2 medium artillery pieces in my games lately, although after having played a handful of games I've decided to start taking 1 Artillery piece and 1 AT gun.

Where the French are weak is obviously in their armor. I've only used a Renault R35 & an AMC Schneider P16 in normal games (and the Char 2C once in a ridiculous game). The Renault (along with some other French tanks) suffer from a rule called One Man Turret, in which it must pass an order test when advancing, even if it's not pinned. Not terrible, but it does add in another hindrance for them.

Up next I'd really like to flesh out my Cavalry some more to see what I can do with them. I only have 6 at the moment, but they seem pretty good.
