Become Ironman In Just Three Tournaments

By Glenn Van Meter

Last year at Historicon, No Dice No Glory ran a very successful Ironman Tournament for Firelock Games. The gaming spanned three systems, two days, and dozens of competitors. All three sub-tournaments were the largest Firelock Games tournaments to date for each system. We even had demo tables on-hand for passers-by to try out what they were seeing. So it was no surprise that Firelock Games has asked us to help them make this year another overwhelming success.

For those unfamiliar with the idea, an Ironman Tournament is like a triathlon for miniatures gamers. It is an optional multi-tournament event where competitors play in three or more sub-tournaments, each of a different system or theme. The scores are then aggregated for a final Ironman score.

The player who scores the highest across all three tournaments will become a Firelock Games Ironman and earn a notable prize. Everyone who participates in the Ironman will also get a prize for completing three grueling tournaments. Last year’s general prize included custom range rulers and tokens for a variety of Firelock games.

Please note that you can compete in an individual tournament without competing in the Ironman if you would prefer. The Ironman is an optional competition for those hardcore players interested in a variety of Firelock games.

This year we decided to open up the Ironman competition a little bit and have included four different tournaments. However, an entrant only needs to take part in three of the tournaments to compete in the Ironman. Players who complete all four tournaments will have a bit of an advantage in that their worst tournament result will be dropped. These four tournaments will be held over three days of Historicon – Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.

The first tournament will be Oak & Iron on Thursday 21 July 2022, from 2-7 pm. Players will have three 90-minute rounds to prove that they are the best admirals in the Caribbean. Their squadrons must be two to four ships strong and 50 points or less. Squadrons may not include ships of the line.  Registration email: TalesoftheSail@gmail.com

Friday, July 22, 2022, is a day of combat on land and will begin with Blood & Valor. Forces will go over the top at 9 am sharp and engage in hour-long raiding sessions until approximately 2 pm. Player forces will need to be no more than 150 points and may be selected either from the core rulebook or the Russian PDF list. Registration email: rkd1463@gmail.com

The second tournament on Friday is the Blood & Plunder (land battles) tournament. Running from 2:30 pm until about 7:30 pm, Players will have three 90-minute rounds to collect as much glory and treasure as possible. Forces will need to be 150 points or less, and constructed from the core rulebook, No Peace Beyond the Line, or Fire on the Frontier expansions. Tournament packs will be emailed to players and available on-site and will include mission details and more specifics about the tournament. Registration email: TalesoftheSail@gmail.com

The final competition will be on the open sea!

Saturday, July 23rd features Blood & Plunder (sea engagements). The first sails will be spotted on the horizon at noon and the chase will last until 6 pm, with players getting two-hour rounds to complete their games. These games will feature 200-point forces including ships engaging on the high seas. Forces must be constructed from the core rulebook, No Peace Beyond the Line or Fire on the Frontier expansions. Tournament packs will be emailed to players and available on-site and will include mission details and more specifics about the tournament. Registration email: TalesoftheSail@gmail.com

If any of these tournaments sound interesting then you are welcome to sign up by email. You can compete in individual tournaments without competing in the Ironman.

If you would like to compete, but don’t have enough miniatures to take part, we are happy to lend out forces (or even just ships). Let us know when you register that you’d like a loaner army so that we can make sure everyone is accounted for ahead of time. We also ask that you bring at least two copies of your list with you.

For those of you who want to just come hang out, we will have plenty of space in the Firelock Games Tournament Area to play pick-up games, play scenario games, and of course, we’ll be running demos the whole time we’re there.

We here at NDNG and the Tales of the Sail crew especially are really looking forward to seeing everyone again, and can’t wait to see you across the table at the Firelock Games Ironman Tournament! In the meantime we’re continuing with the 2022 Summer of Plunder, so check that out to win some cool Firelock miniatures.
