Nineveh We Are Coming & The Beauty of Great Game Design

By Mitch Reed

One of the benefits of my day job is that I get to play games at work for research and recently some co-workers and I tried out Nineveh: We are coming from Nuts! Publishing (a company I really like).

Since I knew two members of the design team, Rex Brynen and Brian Train, I felt that the game would be something special and after we played it one afternoon, I saw how great designers can abstract a difficult concept and bring a solid game to the market.

Freezing Inferno, Hotness from Princeps Games

By Mitch Reed

Recently the folks from Princeps Games in Serbia sent me a copy of their latest design, Freezing Inferno which covers the 1939-1940 Soviet-Finnish War.

I thought the topic of the game was unique and I am a big fan of their previous title, March on the Drina, which covers the Central Powers’ attack on Serbia during the Great War.

Recently I have been playing a lot of games from small European designers and am starting to love the work they do.

Assembling Battlefront’s 10.5cm Railway AA Gun

By Richard Steer

Trains are great. I’m sure I’m not alone in saying that I’ve loved trains for as long as I can remember. It’s no surprise, therefore, that when Flames of War allows you to stick a giant anti-aircraft gun onto the back of a railway wagon, I’m going to jump at the opportunity.

To this end, I recently purchased four 10.5cm FlaK39 Railway Cars to add to my Late-War German collection. Unfortunately, there are no assembly instructions either included with the kit or on the web, so I’ve written up the assembly process I used in the hope that it will help others.

Europe Asunder – 100 Years War – 3D STL File review.

By Tom Burgess

Henry Turner is one of the most prolific 3D Files creators for wargaming.  I first came across Henry’s work searching for STL files to supplement my Back Seas fleets. In addition to those glorious ships he has offered “6mm” collections for the American Civil War, Napoleonics, and others. Now he has entered the Medieval era with his new 100 Years War Kickstarter.

Henry asked No Dice No Glory if we would be willing to do a review of his new 100 Years War Kickstarter.  As I did a review of his 10 to 28mm  “Battleground 1983: Warsaw Pact” project previously, I volunteered to follow up with this one. This Europe Asunder – 100 Years War Kickstarter goes active on April 28th, 2023 and runs  until May 12th, 2023.

Flames of War Sexton/Ram Kit Review

By Richard Steer

One of the most enjoyable parts of the current Flames of War release cycle has been the new plastic kits that Battlefront has developed. A number of new kits have been released for Bulge: British, including a box that covers the Sexton self-propelled gun, the Ram tank, and the Ram Kangaroo armored personnel carrier. I have a bit of a soft spot for the Kangaroo, so I recently picked up the box in order to add some to my Late-War British.

The box can build four vehicles, and contains two sprues per vehicle. The first sprue has all of the components needed to build a Sexton, specifically the Sexton Mk II.

Review: Second Front by Mirco Prose

By Mitch Reed

Recently I had to spend some time recuperating at home from “cave cough” which is prevalent in our West Virginia mountain bunker. This gave me the chance to check out the new release from Micro Prose called Second Front. I had the game on my wish list since the first news of the game came out well over a year ago. I was able to spend a good amount of time on the game and discovered how much fun it was.

App Review: Model Colors

By Richard Steer

Many wargamers that I know keep a recipe book, a notebook that is used to record which paints have been used for a particular project. This record is invaluable should the project be put on hold for a time, or ends up being extended at a later date due to new releases, as it avoids the question of “what on earth did I paint those with?”

Model Colors is a free iOS application that I have started using in place of my own recipe book. At its core is a paint library holding over 24,000 products from a wide range of manufacturers, which includes other types of products such as inks, pigments, and thinners. It also has a number of features that mean it can serve as more than just a catalog of the paints that you own.

Review: BelloLudi WWII Skirmish

By Mitch Reed

Some of you may recall my review of an area game from Peter van Dop and the folks at BelloLudi, a Dutch game company. Peter sent me another game of his to review called BelloLudi World War Two Skirmish game 1939-1945 and it has some of the same great mechanics and playability of his previous title.

Review: Dawn of Iron by Scary Biscuits Studios

By Mitch Reed

I always wanted to get into playing with American Civil War Ironclads, however I was never motivated by any of the existing rules to start collecting and playing this period. This changed last year when I saw a sneak preview from Mike Haught (Yes, the one from Battlefront) which featured a set of rules he was working on.

Mike started with a desire to tackle very underrepresented genres of gaming in way that focuses on a more complete story of the period. His first title, The Dawn of Iron (DOI) really changes the landscape of ACW naval combat, and it is a game that I feel many gamers will love.

Product Review: Blackbeard’s Revenge for Oak & Iron

By Mitch Reed

One of most interesting box sets for Oak & Iron is the Blackbeard’s Revenge pack which features some unique historical ships for your collection. The box comes with two ships, the frigate Queen Anne’s Revenge and the sloop Revenge which were the ships of Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet respectively. Both of these ships are a must for a player who wants to play the pirate faction in the game since they are only available for that faction.
