Listing Right: Blood & Plunder at Historicon 2023

200point Sea Tournament – old vs. new sloop

By Erich Goebel

List building in Blood & Plunder (and any wargame) can be one of the most intimidating facets of learning a new game and delving into competitive and focused, serious play. Blood & Plunder also features over 100 different factions to play under seven umbrella nationalities with fantastic nuance and differences that give each a unique flavor to play and test. These numbers can be overwhelming, as one flips through the one core book and three expansion books available to compare list options.

Luckily, the online force builder tool is utterly amazing and is actually fun and convenient to use.

AdeptiCon Historicals 2023 Preview

By Michael Rafferty

AdeptiCon is back! After a triumphant return last year, the premier wargaming convention is back in Schaumburg, Illinois.

AdeptiCon continues to grow year after year, with new events and larger existing events. Wizards of the Coast will be in attendance this year with their new game Onslaught. No longer contained by only the Marriott Renaissance, the Hyatt Regency will again host several events. Historical events like Bolt Action and Flames of War will be there again, but we welcome A Song of Ice and Fire and Lord of the Rings to the growing AdeptiCon presence at the Hyatt.

But you didn’t come here to read about how we’re growing. You want to know what’s going to be run at the con! Battlefront will be hosting a one-day Mid-War National tournament. This will be a four-round event at 100 points held on Thursday.

The Spanish Raid Maryland – April Tournament AAR

By Tom Mullane

This past April I turned 39. And when my wife asked me what I wanted to do with my birthday weekend, I told her I had it all planned out. I would be heading down to Maryland to play in my first Blood and Plunder tournament in nearly six months.

Glenn Van Meter, Tyler Stone, and I had been plotting and scheming for months to put on a land tournament at Critical Hit Games in Abingdon Maryland.

The cards had been printed, the terrain had been made, and the invites sent. Heading into the weekend we had 24 signed up but expected a few would drop for the usual reasons. Since I was traveling the furthest, Glenn and Tyler generously told me I could play in the tournament without acting as a TO. (I would not be taking any prize money obviously, because I’m an eagle scout who wouldn’t break the sacred vow we all took as Tournament Organizers).

This tournament I would be bringing my Spanish, to see if my multitude of games getting my clock cleaned might finally pay off. My friends Niguel and Shane get credit as my sparring partners in the lead-up to this Tournament.

Become Ironman In Just Three Tournaments

By Glenn Van Meter

Last year at Historicon, No Dice No Glory ran a very successful Ironman Tournament for Firelock Games. The gaming spanned three systems, two days, and dozens of competitors. All three sub-tournaments were the largest Firelock Games tournaments to date for each system. We even had demo tables on-hand for passers-by to try out what they were seeing. So it was no surprise that Firelock Games has asked us to help them make this year another overwhelming success.

Summer of Plunder 2: Pyratical Boogaloo

By Tyler

The global campaign is back, and it’s bigger and better than ever!

The Talesmen of No Dice No Glory will be partnering with Firelock Games, Blood & Pigment, and The Plunder Den to present you with another global community campaign for Firelock’s “pirate” games – Blood & Plunder and Oak & Iron. Veterans of last year’s inaugural campaign will recall that the Summer of Plunder follows a loose structure, offering a fun way for Firelock gamers around the world to interact, regale with photos and stories of their battles, and compete for the glory of their chosen faction (and prizes, many prizes).

To the Victor, the Plunder: Tournaments with Firelock Games

By Tyler

There’s been a bit of a Firelock Games ‘drought’ here on No Dice lately. In that time, the gang from Miami has kicked out the ‘Fire on the Frontier’ expansion, nearly finished their Kickstarter, launched a new game out of nowhere, and teased one more in the works. We haven’t been quite as busy as all that, but we haven’t been idle this whole time either. The Tales-men have jumped out of the digital space and started running tournaments of our own. Captain ‘Chairborne’ will be along to talk about his experience at our most recent event, but today I’d like to share with you how we’ve been doing… well, what we’re doing.

Blood & Plunder battles in North America?! Must be ‘Fire on the Frontier’!

Grabbing a Venue

Choosing a venue is the first step to any event, unless you’re running at a Con. It would been simple enough for us to pick one of the excellent local gaming stores in the area to host us. However, if you can find a venue that stocks the game, that’s an advantage.

Some of you might know that Firelock had to pull out of the 2022 Adepticon. They had their reasons, but it was disappointing to have people who wanted to pick up a new force or jump into a new game without anywhere to shop.

That’s why we chose Critical Hit in Abingdon MD for the ‘Easter Island’ tournament. The store has a great Firelock section, so we were able to grow the community and also help them shift some products. Ask not just what your store can do for you, but also, what you can do for your store.

Firelock Games: Fire on the Frontier Overview and Oak & Iron with GWUS

By Mitch Reed

The makers of Blood & Plunder leave the high seas behind to immerse players in some of the most interesting fights that have ever taken place in North America. The new Fire on the Frontier book from Firelock Games takes the game in a new direction and now you can play with many of the forces that were seen in King Phillip’s and King William’s War that took place between 1675 and 1697.

Sloop There It Is: Converting the Sloop of War ‘Sophie’

By Glenn Van Meter
One of the coolest parts of is the ships you get to use in the game. Firelock knocked it out of the park with their line of ships, even beyond just making a game where incorporating ships into gameplay is as seamless as possible. But to add to all of that they took the ships they make kits for and then added even more ships to the game based on those hulls. The difference is that the extra ships are simply rigged differently. While they point out that it isn’t necessary to actually change the rigging on your vessel, the modelers among us enjoy tinkering and making those variants.

Cyber Wars ‘Redux’ with Firelock Games

By Tyler Stone
This past weekend, ran its second ‘Cyber Wars’ digital convention. During the first Cyber Wars, I was able to , the lead designer of Blood & Plunder and Oak & Iron, by
Mitch Reed to cover Firelock’s other game, Blood & Valor. This time, Mitch and I joined forces and put everyone under one digital circus tent. You can check out the entire 2-hour recording on the , or read on below for the ‘spark notes’ version.
Blood & Plunder
By now, any avid NDNG reader should be aware that Firelock Games wrapped up their latest Kickstarter, titled This expansion not only adds new factions, characters, and starter box but also advances the game’s timeline into the 18th century while bringing the game’s model line into the 21st century with a range of hard-plastic miniatures. What you may not know is that ‘Raise the Black’ is the highest-grossing historical wargame ever released on Kickstarter. Over 2,000 backers came together to pledge more than $360,000. The next step in this wildly successful venture from the boys from La Florida will be to set up the Pledge Manager. Once that is available, backers will be able to update their pledges and claim rewards. The Pledge Manager will also allow Late Backers to get in on the action if they missed the initial offers.
While we wait for the Kickstarter’s 2021 ship date, we can still expect to see continued growth for the game. An intermediary PDF will bring rules for some of the new units that we’ve already seen on the Force Builder. There is also a possibility of seeing some new terrain and units come to the game before ‘Raise the Black’ reaches our doorstep.
