Conquest: Flying Dinos!

I’ve been diving into Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings lately, trying to split my time working on two different armies. The designers at Para Bellum Games came up with what was missing from the W’adhrun. A flying dinosaur.

I recently split a two-player starter box with another player who wanted the Yoroni half of the set, so I got my very own Quatl! I’ll cover how I assembled it, and some of the decisions I had to make along the way.

Archangel: When ruins want revenge!

I admit it. I’m a new army junkie.

Whenever a new force comes out, I look at the new faction rules, and the new models to see if either appeals to me.

So when Para Bellum Games announced they were doing a “rebuild” on one of their oldest factions, the Hundred Kingdoms for Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings, this past winter, I was immediately interested.

Yes, the W’adrhun are my first army. And orcs riding dinos are still my first love in the game. But, a gamer needs a second army. Right? And when fellow NDNGer Tom Gall said he was looking to unload his Conquest Hundred Kingdoms army, I jumped at the chance.

But then the reboot of the faction rules hit, and I had some tough choices to make.

Conquest: Getting Started

Are the Conquest one-player starter boxes a good way to get into the game?

By Troy Hill

The first question any player asks when starting a new game is usually along the lines of:

Are the Starter Sets any good? Should I purchase that first?

In most games, the answer is yes.

For Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings, it holds true there as well.

I’ve built almost two starter sets worth of W’adrhun so far, and I’m seeing just how valuable those sets are.

We want our Whiskey! Gettysburg Soldiers at ATC

By Troy Hill

“It is General Burnside’s special request,” Ferrero yelled to the two regiments, “that the two 51sts take that bridge. Will you do it?” Quickly, the teetotaling Cpl. Lewis Patterson replied, “Will you give us our whiskey, Colonel, if we take it?” The fired-up Ferrero answered affirmatively before asking again, “Will you take it?” “Yes,” the men shouted back. Sure enough, they did, and the men of the 51st Pennsylvania got their whiskey back. Source: Emerging Civil War:

I’m on a quest to play just about every American Civil War rules-set I can find. From the chart-heavy simulation depths of Johnny Reb II, to the abstract Army-Level approach of Altar of Freedom, I want to give each an afternoon’s play.

After a day of Johnny Reb II at my local game store, I can see where my tastes run to the more abstract. Currently in queue I’ve got Fire and Fury, both regimental and brigade tomes.

So when I saw that Larry Reber of the GettysburgSoldiers.com rules was going to be at HMGS-Great Lakes’ flagship event, Advance the Colors, I knew I had to wheedle my way into a game.

Arguing Kings: Trying Conquest TLAoK

I might have a few orcs on dinosaurs to paint up!

By Troy Hill

I have to blame Jeremy Duvall for this one.

Jeremy is one of the main co-hosts on the Counter Charge Podcast for all things Kings of War (KOW). For the last several months, he’s been sharing how he hopes to build a KOW scene by playing what the locals are playing, and then interesting them in his game of choice (KOW). Jeremy’s local group is playing Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings (hereafter: Conquest).

So far, it sounds like Jeremy is playing  a lot MORE Conquest than the locals are playing KOW.

Since my attempts at getting a local KOW scene to take hold have been fruitless, I decided to heed Jeremy’s advice. But the locals here are playing ye olde world of hammery-wars, which doesn’t interest me. Been there, done that. I’d rather trade my money for models and games from smaller companies.

The wait is over!

“This is what you’ve all been waiting for. This September, the fighting intensifies. Warlord Games and Osprey Games are proud to announce a new edition of the world’s greatest World War II wargame… “~ Warlord Games

…premiering late September, 2024.

Warlord has an announcement on their website here.

EDITOR’s NOTE: Since that includes more information than was in the original press release, this story is being updated with additional information.

This seems to be the year for World War 2 action from Warlord Games! The exhaust and smoke from the battlefield of Warlord’s new Achtung Panzer! game is hot an heavy, and now Warlord announces the impending release of Bolt Action 3rd Edition.  Wow!

In a press release from Warlord Games, Alessio Cavatore is tagged as the rules guru behind the new version. Since he’s been at the controls of the game since its inception, that’s no surprise.

A game of Achtung Panzeer about to be played
The battle is about to begin!

By Troy Hill

A lot of interest is brewing about Warlord’s impending new arrival, the Achtung Panzer game. And rightly so.

I had the opportunity to lead members of our local gaming group through a (very) basic game this weekend. Reviews were positive from the players, post-game.

Rather than give a blow-by-blow of the battle, I’d like to look back at some of the rules, what we kept looking up, and how the game rules functioned as the players challenged my memory (like a rusty steel trap with a broken spring) and kept me looking up rules.

Achtung Panzer! Skirmish level tank battles

Warlord is doing it again!

What are they doing?

Creating another game that expands into an underserved niche. If you feel the need to run some tank on tank combat in 28mm without all that pesky infantry bogging you down, Achtung Panzer! could be the game for you.

But we have a ton of WW2 games now!

I hear you. Warlord’s flagship is Bolt Action, WW2 level Skirmish platoon level combat on the tabletop. There’s also Flames of War in 15mm at the Company level. Not to mention the Too Fat Lardies range of WWII games, and countless others available via sites such at Wargame Vault.

Warlord even has their Tank Wars variant rules for Bolt action.

But this is not Bolt Action rehashed.
