Just back from Historicon 2021!

Conventions are back and the NDNG crew attended Historicon 2021 to take it all in. I quickly realized how much I miss the cons, the gamers and members of the NDNG crew. We had a full house of our staff at the event, with Tyler Stone, Thomas Mullane and Glenn Van Meter hosting the Firelock Ironman with appearances from Ben Hudler, Glenn Goddard, Steve Murga-Jones, Dr. Chris Woltz and Howard West playing in many of the games at the event which we will briefly talk about here.

Hoisting Anchor and getting started in Oak & Iron

Now that conventions are making an appearance again it is time for those who were interested in to start collecting their ships and getting them to a nearby table. Over the last few months gaming admirals have been playing either online or when they get a chance versus a live opponent and many fans of the game have been tinkering with their lists and adjusting how they plan to play the game in the future. Since so few of us have had very much experience in live play, now is a perfect time for those who have yet played the game to get into it.

Firelock Games reveals ‘War Stories: roleplaying WW2’

By Tyler Stone

As things get back to normal in the world (hooray, Historicon on the horizon!) are ramping up their offering of games yet again. Besides to their tabletop wargames ‘Blood & Plunder,’ ‘Oak & Iron,’ and ‘Blood & Valor‘, they’re making their first forays into some bold new territory; Historical Roleplaying Games.

Although they are sticking to their ‘piratical’ roots with ‘Under the Black Flag‘, it’s their World War 2 entry which is the furthest along. They’re missing a prime marketing opportunity by not calling it ‘Hedgerows & Hetzers,’ but the team at Firelock has decided on the much less tongue-in-cheek title of ‘War Stories‘.

Pirates, Fleets, and Trenches – Historicon 2021 Tournament Signups!

By Tom “Cap’n Chairborne” Mullane

As the leaves turn, and the winds grow chilly, Historicon will soon be upon us. This coming November 11 through 14 many of us are coming together for the first time in a long time to get some gaming in. Glenn Van Meter, Tyler Stone, and Tom Mullane (the Tails of the Sail gentlemen) have quite a bit planned in terms of Firelock Games this time around. Tom will also be wearing a Spanish Conquistador outfit, because he lost a bet.

Signups are happening now on the Community Page for under events. So please sign up soon. We have available slots, and loaner armies, but those spots won’t wait forever. Check below for the specifics of each tournament. (Blood and Plunder, Oak and Iron, Blood and Valor). And remember, Firelock is providing a special prize to anyone brave enough to play in all three events.

Product Review: Blackbeard’s Revenge for Oak & Iron

By Mitch Reed

One of most interesting box sets for Oak & Iron is the Blackbeard’s Revenge pack which features some unique historical ships for your collection. The box comes with two ships, the frigate Queen Anne’s Revenge and the sloop Revenge which were the ships of Blackbeard and Stede Bonnet respectively. Both of these ships are a must for a player who wants to play the pirate faction in the game since they are only available for that faction.
