Painting Modern Russian Army Camouflage

I’ll level with you. Looking at Google images of modern Russian army camouflage gave me a headache and trying to figure out how to replicate it at 28mm pushed the headache into migraine territory.

The easiest solution would have been to paint the camo in a solid bright green color since that’s what the camo looks like at a distance anyway but I decided against it and threw together a BDU-looking camo pattern.

I’ll take the hit for historical accuracy because I think what I came up with looks passable to those who don’t know what right should look like. Feel free to judge – I can take it. If you’re more committed to the crusade of historical accuracy than I was then I applaud your fanaticism and have fun. If you find success please send tips my way.

All colors are Vallejo brand.

Helmet – Russian Green (894)

Camouflage – Luftwaffe Cam. Green (823), Beige Brown (875), and Black (950)

Rucksack and Webbing – German Cam. Dark Green (896)

Elbow and Knee Pads – German Field Grey WWII (830)

Boots – Black (950)

Below are the steps I took in painting the camouflage.

Prime the model black.
Basecoat the camouflage uniform with a 1:1 mix of Black and Luftwaffe Cam. Green.
Highlight the camo with Luftwaffe Cam. Green.
Add patches of Beige Brown. I used a toothpick to apply ameba shaped blotches.
Add patches of Black. I used a toothpick to apply ameba shaped blotches.
Finish painting the rest of the model and take the fight to the enemy!

  1. Well, nice paint job, but not even close to any pattern of modern Russian camo.
    Russian ground troops wear pixel-dot camo, EMR Leto in Russian, Arctic and troops of ODKB wear their own patterns, so as Syrian corpus.
    Different troops camo is easily googled.
