Mitch and Sean are back at it in this first “On the Road” episode for No Dice No Glory. This time they are playing Team Yankee at an event hosted by You Hobby Place in Fredericksburg VA. They speak with some of the players and NDNG writer and event organizer Ed Sales.
The return of the Vietnam War in ‘Nam is eagerly anticipated by many of us as our Vietnam forces are gathering dust on the shelf. All the favorites are back:
The airmobile 1st Cavalry Division (abbreviated 1CD and called “First Cav” if you want to sound like a cool Army guy)
The mechanized 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment (abbreviated 11ACR and called the “11th ACR”)
The infantry-based 25th Infantry Division (abbreviated 25ID and called the “25th ID”)
Unlike the earlier version of Vietnam, the differences between these forces are much more subtle. Previously, you could choose between having Confident Veterans with the First Cav or 11th ACR or the cheaper Confident Trained 25th ID. Now all forces are equivalent to Veterans and hit on a 4+. There are differences however with the First Cav being the most elite infantry who hit in an assault on a 3+ and have a Skill of 3+, and the 25th ID who are pretty much 4+ on all their stats. With only slight differences like that, players should probably focus more on choosing a force based on the toys they are allowed to bring. Let’s get a little bit more in-depth.
Many people understand that the Team Yankee (TY) rules were essentially the Beta version of the Flames of War (FOW) V4 rules. The refinements of the TY rules into V4 were mostly positive. The frustrations came for players who play both games. The rules were similar enough that players (including me) were often confused as we switched between the rulesets. We are all used to playing multiple rule sets and keeping them straight. But, when the rules systems are this close to each other, trying to remember if you made a Dash or Tactical Move when breaking off from an assault is difficult to do.
Many were hoping that the new version of the TY rules was going to take TY to V2 and make it rules capable with FOW V4, but that is not going to happen just yet. Instead, TY Early War (‘NAM and Fate of a Nation) is going to start that integration. Early War (EW) for TY means the 1960’s and ’70s. This makes sense as there was a huge difference between Generation 2 tanks and Generation 3 tanks. If you are not familiar with the generations of tanks,
This time Iron Tom, Matt Varnish, Chairborne Tom, and Mitch talk about the upcoming release from Battlefront “‘NAM”.
They talk about the new universal rules, the special rules and the US forces in the new book. Even if you are not into games about Vietnam you should tune in and hear these guys talk about how excited they are for this great new release.
Loads of excitement from the Delta to the DMZ, so grab your surfboards and join us for the first of many articles about ‘Nam!
Hello there! Today we are going to take a look at what Stripes brings to the Tournament Scene. (Spoiler Alert: It’s a game changer.)
There has been a ton of intrigue about what Stripes would bring to the table after Red Thunder came out. If you play Americans, this book helps immensely when you deal with the Red Scourge in competitive play. If you play a USSR or East Germans, be warned, the lists in this book will give you headaches, but you can learn a lot when you see what your opponent might bring to the table.
Stripes brings a new set of tools for the Americans and NATO Allies to wield, in a way that can be used the same way East Germans wield T55s. The M60, at four points a tank, is not as cheap as the T55, but I’d take those over the T55s. More shots and being hit on fours is a good break away from the Abrams which comes in at twice that amount, though the Abrams has a lot more survivability.
In November, WWPD published an excellent article by Tom Burgess on Fight Outnumbered and Win – The U.S. Army in Team Yankees Stripes, which can
Building on that foundation, I would like to start highlighting each element of the Air Land Battle, Combined Arms Team. Lets start by taking a look at the Air Defense umbrella, doctrinally known as Short Range Air Defense (SHORAD).
Avenues of Approach
If the enemy has air superiority, the avenue should provide concealment from the air. Air avenues for attack helicopters airmobile forces and close air support have different characteristics.
Analyzing avenues of approach is as important to the defender as to the attacker. The defender must accurately determine the main approaches to his sector and identify the internal avenues which will permit him to maneuver against the attacker.
Plastic Soldier Company (PSC) recently released their much-anticipated . If you follow their , you may have been aware that the initial run of kits was missing the drivers hatch, but PSC quickly retooled the sprue, and to my understanding has replaced any boxes that were missing this piece. I received my box from PSC over the holidays and I am very pleased with the kit.
The box includes five models, which can be built as the German A1/A3 or Canadian C1 variants. As new Team Yankee player who has picked up the West Germans, PSCs timing is great. Battlefront has announced a plastic Leopard 1 kit to support the release of the Dutch, Canadians, and Australians later in 2018. I suspect, however, we might not see BF’s plastic Leopard 1 until much later this year. If you cannot wait, PSCs kit is definitely worth your money.
Coinciding with the release of Stripes, Battlefront has stipulated that one can be used in any Team Yankee force. While surely some folks can plug in some tactical gaps in their list with an allied formation, we can also put together a historical list for a force that is not out yet, like Canadians!
My good friend Rob is a retired Artillery FOO with the Canadian Army, and he can use Allied Formations to better represent his 4 CMBG force in Team Yankee. While there is a list coming out for them down the pipe (if rumors are to be believed), he can run them right now. Canada bought NATO tanks (Leopard Is and later Leopard IIs) but retained many of the M113-based vehicles. As you can see by the above picture, Rob is eagerly awaiting the LAV box release!!
