Flames of War: Mid-War Hungarians Spoiled

By Mitch Reed

Hungarians recently were added to the late-war period with the release of the book for Following the Finnish we now have the Hungarians making an appearance for the mid-war period. The new expansion comes in a 36-page booklet and gives you a lot of options if you want to field a Hungarian MW force. The new booklet comes with three tank, two infantry and a cavalry list for you to create a Hungarian force. Many players asked why the LW Hungarians did not have a full cavalry force and only the option to take only one mounted scout unit, well the horsemen are in full force for MW, which should make many gamers happy.

Heavy or Light Metal

The T-38 Company looks interesting and gives you the option to take a Toldi scout tank platoon and the option to field either a Panzer III or Panzer IV to support the T-38 unit. No matter what options you decide to take you still need to take two T-38 platoons with this force, however these units max out with five tanks each so they are pretty beefy. Players should also note that this formation is the only one where you have an option to take the Panzer III which comes with both the 5cm and 7.5cm guns as options.

The other true tank unit is the Panzer IV unit. Due to the “Small Numbers” special rule you can only take one formation of these tanks. The platoons max out with three tanks and you can take either the long or short gun. This unit also has the Toldi tank platoon in the org chart, but that is all the flavor this force has.

The final armor unit is the Autocannon Company which has an HQ made up of Toldi tanks and platoons made up of Nimrod Autocannons. This unit only has the three Nimrod platoons and each are only made up of two vehicles each, which means you max out at six Nimrods per formation.

Holding the Line
Hungarian infantry are found in two formations in the new booklet with a choice between motorized infantry or light infantry. These units are very different with the motorized unit, which does not have vehicles, being rated as Confident/Trained and is hit on a 4+.

The light infantry is Confident/Green and will take a hit on a 3+.

Both units come with large 10-stand platoons and a host of support options to include mortars and anti-tank guns. The light infantry does come with an organic gun platoon which can also be used as an AT asset with an AT rating of 8, but like its parent unit it is Confident/Green.

No Horsing Around
The most interesting unit is the cavalry unit which has three horse platoons and support with a 75cm gun platoon and 40cm AT platoon. The unit comes with the usual cavalry rules and I cannot wait to see the throng of players who will make cavalry charges on my MW forces.

Support
The real strength of the Hungarians is perhaps their support options which are very robust. The option to take either a Marder or STuG (but not both) platoon really gives you some great mobile AT assets.
The Hungarians also can get up to two platoons of artillery support with some heavy hitting 105cm guns along with some 80cm and 75cm guns as options. All of the guns in the support section are Confident/Trained and hit on a 3+, so some of your better AT gun options may be found in the Motorized Infantry Company.

The one interesting unit is the Assault Pioneer unit which is the perfect unit to hold an objective in your zone or use their flamethrowers to bring some heat in an attack.

Hungary for More?

The addition of both the Finns and Hungarians really adds some great flavor to the mid war game and reunites many gamers with some of their favorite forces from the past. The unit cost of the Hungarians makes them a good force to pair up with some of the German MW formations. I think you may see a T-38 horde in the future, which would be awesome since it is a very neat looking tank.

I know many long time Flames of War players will really love this new booklet.

  1. Nice write up Mitch. Glad to see the Axis Allies being available for Mid_War.

  2. You are amazing! Nice concise treatment of the MW Hungarians. I’m looking forward to exploring the hit on 3, green Rife co. I see horde potential! I’ve got to have a Nimrod formation, just cause!

  3. Splendid Mitch, my next must have option!
Hungarian Armour with Pioneers and Huzzars

  4. Odd how the axis allies get official lists with the Pz 38(t) , but the Germans don’t ?

Wonder if BF are still worried everyone would use PSC’s kit ?

    1. I thought there was a command card option for a Pz 38(t) formation in Iron Cross or Ghost Panzers.

      1. As far as I know its only a Community Card formation , so isn’t on Forces .
