As many a tabletop war gamer has learned, the winter holiday season is a wonderful time for terrain builders. This past winter I stocked up on the three styles of Lemax mats in stock at Michaels with the idea of using them to build European style cobblestone roads for my urban tables.
I wanted to build 6 x 12″ sections of road that will allow me to easily stack and store the road sections as well as drop them down on the table as needed. I found a pack of 20 basswood sheets measuring 6 x 12 x 1/8 inches on Amazon and added them to my cart.
While waiting for the basswood to arrive I spread out the large pebble sheet on a large flat surface and weight down the edges with heavy books. By the time the basswood arrived, the large pebble sheet was flat enough to work with.
The basswood came in 6×12″ sections. I primed the top and bottom in an attempt to seal it to help avoid any unwanted warping in the Virginia humidity. After priming I placed a sheet of wax paper over it and weighed it down with a few books to keep it flat while drying. If you’re in a hurry you could probably get away without taking the time to prime the basswood.
Cut the large pebble sheet to the appropriate dimensions. Once the basswood dried I glued the large pebble sheet on with a layer of PVA glue. A stack of books on top once again helped to ensure everything set as it should.
Prime the piece with grey spray paint.
The paints I used for the remainder of the project.
Apply a few coats of Apple Barrel Pewter Grey.
Using an old toothbrush, flick on layers of Apple Barrel Granite Grey, Dark Granite, and Dark Blue Grey.
