The Boulevard – An Iron Cross City Fight AAR

by Tom Burgess

Our local Flames of War gaming group got in a second City Fight game. Last time we fought out “The Square” mission from So this time we turned out attention to Iron Cross with “The Boulevard” mission. “Battle Buddy” Ed would be playing his Soviets while Charles “6by9” would be rolling out the Germans. The point level was 55 points.

We played the game at Hard Knox Games when we could make great use of the in-store terrain collection. We used a 28mm city game mat as the base, which we thought looked much better than the plain black base we used last time. We the two halves of Miniature Building Authority (MBA) “Factory Building” to make the two main objective buildings.  To further subdivide these two buildings into four “rooms” we simply added some Battlefront Desert Walls.  We added some other MBA building halves to add to the boards generic “rubble” look. We also added some building around the perimeter edge of the board which were “off table” but helped with the visual back-drops.

Learning Bolt Action

Hi my name is Mitch and I am a gamer.

Our podcasts seem to have one drug reference in each episode, so it’s a well-worn joke to many of us here at NDNG. We’re always jonesing for that next gaming fix.

We are always looking for that new game to pick up in which we invest time and money for the ultimate payoff which is to have Fun.

So. over the last few months, I took the excitement of my latest enabler, Jon Russell from and decided to give Bolt Action a try. Bolt Action is now in its second edition and has been around for a while now. Two editions and I hadn’t tried it yet? Why not?

Perhaps it was for the same reason many gamers don’t try new games? We tend to look for the bad in a game in order to give us an excuse to ignore it. But, the only time I heard anything bad about Bolt Action was one person say it wasn’t his cup of tea. This excuse gave me the ability to avoid the game, to not paint 28mm models, and not pick up another money and time suck.

Gaslands Review

1st Gear:  Do you remember a time when miniatures gaming was much more about having fun with toys, and less about min/maxing your army lists to ensure complete and total victory over unsuspecting fools?

No?  Me neither!

But, if such a time existed, Gaslands comes from that time.  is a miniatures rules set from Mike Hutchinson and published by .  It takes the time-honoured traditions of Car Wars and other post-apocalyptic car battle games, the flavour of the Mad Max-type setting, and the mechanics of a 21st-century miniatures game, and rolls them into one tasty, succinct, and inexpensive package.

A player needs only the book and some Matchbox or Hotwheels 1/64 scale cars to get playing.  This review will take a look at the setting, rules, and materials needed to play and give you the information you need to decide if Gaslands is for you.

The Square – An Enemy at the Gates City Fight AAR

by Tom Burgess

My good friend, Battle Buddy Ed, and I recently set up a City Fight game from the new Enemy at the Gates book. Ed brought his Soviets and I played Germans in “The Square” mission. The City Fight missions are played on small 3’ by 2’ boards so we decided to experiment with this new mission with 50 point forces. We also decided to keep this as an all infantry fight and agreed to take no tanks.

My Germans were based on a Grenadier Formation with an HQ, two midsize Grenadier platoons, an HMG attached to one of the Grenadier platoons, a full Assault Pioneer platoon, a four-tube 81mm mortar platoon, two 150mm infantry guns and a sniper.

“The Factory” AAR

“The Factory”

By James Copland

Today, Soviet hordes swept into V4 in my man cave. Pulling together opponents and rubble terrain, my friends Ian and Challice played a game with lists from the new sourcebooks Enemy at the Gate and Iron Cross. The commanders had never seen the books before the game, so were given 20 minutes to put a force together. Both choose to run infantry formations, and both choose to run a single formation.

The table before deployment.

They played a new mission from the Iron Cross book.,The Factory. It is played on a smaller table, 2’x3′ and with a mixed deployment zone means, just like in Stalingrad, you could find yourself on the other side of a door of your enemies. Another interesting aspect of this mission is all terrain other than the building is rubble.

This means moving infantry is fast, and assaults are required to get anything done.

The Soviets won the dice roll to choose a side to attack from, as well as the first of the smaller rooms in the center. The win condition of the game is not objective based unless you count clearing the center building an objective. The Soviets chose the bottom left corner, leaving the Germans with the top right. After reading the rubble rules and knowing that bulletproof cover was plentiful, the Soviets chose to commit a Hero Infantry formation, with Strelkovy support, (we wanted to test the 4+ save mechanic.) in addition to the small (13-stand strong) Hero Infantry.

Why You Should Be Playing Blood and Plunder

By Mitch Reed

What is

It is a 28mm skirmish game that takes place during the early age of pirates which is called the . During this time, the British and French fought a war in the Caribbean against the Spanish. Both the French and British enlisted the aid of independent contractors to help them in the fight and became what we call pirates or buccaneers. While much of pirate lore is told in works of fiction; the truth behind this that this was an actual historical war that lasted for almost 130 years and was not contained in just the New World. While I butchered the above history, do not fear, both of the books for B&P come with an in-depth history that will set you straight.
