Painting Horses

By Kreighton Long

Thanks to Great Escape Games I finally worked up the courage to take a crack at painting horses with their Romanian cavalry.  Fortunately for me, I have a former equestrian a shout away to lend her expertise.  A goal I had for my mounted Romanians was to have an eye-catching amount of variety with the different mounts.

Of course with my partner passing my painting desk every so often to quality control my progress I was able to work with her to incorporate some authentic colorings.  Below are some of the different colorings I ended up with and the corresponding colors. All paints used below are from Vallejo.

A Dunn horse painted with Iraqui Sand [819].
A Buckskin horse painted with Green Ochre [914].
A Chestnut horse painted with a 1:1 mix of Red Leather [818] and Beige Brown [875].
A medium brown horse painted with German Cam. Medium Brown [826].
A dark red horse painted with Hull Red [985].
A light brown horse painted with German Cam. Pale Brown [825].
A dark brown horse painted with Chocolate Brown [872].
A dark grey horse painted with German Grey [995].

A grey dapple painted with a base of 1:1 mix of German Grey [995] and Neutral Grey [992].
Happy painting!

    1. Thank you! If it’s a brown color I mix in either Vallejo’s German Camo Black Brown for darker browns or Vallejo’s Leather Brown for lighter browns. If it’s a grey color then I’ll add black. For highlights I add Vallejo’s Buff.
